Veterinary X-ray vehicle
Animedix has recently added a purpose-built mobile veterinary X-ray vehicle to its range. With common illnesses and injuries more easily diagnosed using X-rays several mobile veterinary practices have been exploring the concept of adding a specialist X-ray vehicle to their fleet and this new addition has been designed in response to this growing interest.
This specialist vehicle is based on an L2H3 panel van and although Animedix recommends the Ford Transit for this purpose, they stress that other makes and models such as the Fiat Ducato, Citroen Relay, and similar are just as acceptable. The L2 is smaller in length than their range of mobile veterinary surgeries but more than adequate for this specific purpose. That said, should individual circumstances warrant the need for more space the larger L3 or L4 models can be offered as alternatives.
Animedix has a flexible approach to business and in addition to offering a complete package is more than happy to convert a client-supplied vehicle, new or pre-owned, and install client-supplied equipment.
The Ford Transit
ideal for a mobile veterinary X-ray service.
All panel van manufacturers offer their models in a range of sizes with a wealth of standard and optional features and the Ford Transit is no exception. With a mix of options ranging from engine size to interior cab accessories there is a vehicle package to suit every budget and preference.
The most important details are the internal dimensions of the L2H3 model working space:
Floor length 3044 mm
Floor width 1784 mm
Floor to ceiling (headroom) 2125 mm
These provide a working floor area of 5.43 square metres with adequate headroom for most personnel.
It is important to note that this, and similar models which are rated at 3500 kgs gross vehicle weight, can be driven by anyone holding a standard driving licence and therefore a perfect choice, as there are no restrictions on who can drive. For anyone who has not driven a van of this size, it should be mentioned that they are a dream to drive. Panel vans these days are comfortable, offer great visibility and are fitted out to an extremely high standard, fun to drive, and amazingly easy to manoeuvre.
Mobile veterinary X-ray vehicle specification
This new mobile veterinary X-ray vehicle conversion is based on the experience gained from producing numerous bespoke-built mobile veterinary surgeries.
The interior walls and ceiling are lined with decorative, easily cleaned, panels and the floor is finished with a non-slip heavy duty vinyl material.
Included in the standard specification is a base storage cabinet featuring a small but practical worktop ideal for laptop and other equipment. A recovery cage and small animal carriers are available as optional features.
A full electrical installation including mains landline connection cable, external mains inlet socket, double sockets, light switches, and lighting come as standard.
Other features which are optional include a roof-mounted ventilation fan and air conditioning unit plus handwash facilities.
As far as the X-ray equipment and shielding are concerned Animedix is happy to install exactly what the client requests, (subject to RPA Approval) but it is assumed to cover all or some of the following:
- Protection is normally achieved with Code 3 / Code 5 lead protection wall panels (as specified by the Radiation Protection Advisor).
- Wireless DR Panel with Laptop Setup.
- Mounted 2.4kW or 5kW X-ray Generator.
- Appropriate table with fall and rise.
- A detector holder to fit the Wireless Panel to sit under the animal during X-rays.
- A fail-to-safe lightbox that vet practices are advised to have which cuts the power to the generator if the lightbox does not illuminate.
Understandably sensitive X-ray equipment needs to be securely and professionally installed to protect it and ensure safety for the driver and passenger in the event of a traffic accident. With its experience and reputation within the van conversion industry, the Animedix team ensures all vehicle construction standards are adhered to as part of its ISO 9001 Accreditation.
Radiation Protection Advisor
When it comes to radiation protection, Animedix relies on the services of a fully independent and qualified Radiation Protection Advisor whose advice is sought at the planning stage for their Approval of proposed shielding installation before the commencement of any work.
Acceptance tests are undertaken by the RPA on all newly installed X-ray and shielding equipment to ensure the radiological functions are satisfactory, to specification and comply with Ionising Radiations Regulations.
Safety for veterinary personnel and patients is never compromised!
