What it takes to design a Special-purpose Vehicle
“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple. From a 2003 New York Times interview, this has become the most-cited modern design quote and the shorthand for the principle that design is functional, not just decorative.
Design of the extraordinary:
If you’ve ever seen a state-of-the-art rapid response team saving a life on the high street, a highly secure cash-in-transit vehicle navigating city traffic, or an immersive brand roadshow truck drawing massive crowds, you’ve probably wondered: How and by whom were they created?
The answer is simple: there is a good chance that we will have designed and built some of them in our factory in Leicester.
At Multi Vehicle Technology Ltd, we design, engineer, and convert a vast range of special purpose vehicles. From mobile libraries, mobile veterinary surgeries and catering trucks to advanced incident response units, search and rescue vehicles, and armoured security fleets—if a client needs it, we can design it, and then we can build it.
But there is a massive story behind these two simple actions that few of our clients need fully appreciate as they drive their vehicles away. To bring these often extraordinarily complex vehicles to life, our various specialist teams operate at the crossover of world-class creative design and heavy-duty automotive engineering.
Here is a look behind the curtain at the incredible depth of skill and technology that goes into every single vehicle we deliver.

The creative design stage: Mind Readers & Miracle Workers!
Many of our clients, especially those seeking exhibition vehicles, come to us with nothing more than the germ of an idea to help their business or community activity, whilst others do come to us with an outline brief. However, they do have something in common, that being they know what they want to achieve but, with little knowledge of our industry (which is of course to be expected), they are unsure if their idea is practical, and if so, how on earth it will look or be made to work within the confines of a vehicle. Indeed, what vehicle can be used?
And this is where our design team comes in.
On par with leading London design and creative agencies, our design team doesn’t sit in a stylish glass-panelled office with an espresso machine on hand, preferring instead to operate alongside their shop floor colleagues and actively out “in the field” with our clients. This approach enables them to sketch layouts and prepare creative presentations through a deep understanding of the unique operational realities of the diverse industries we build our special vehicles for, along with the all-important practicalities of every construction.
They know with experience how a Veterinarian moves during surgery, understand the needs of an emergency response team working under pressure, how a chef manages kitchen flow in a high-volume catering van, and the presentational skills sales teams need to demonstrate and promote their products.
In short, each of our designers knows what works and what doesn’t work, what’s practical and what isn’t, what’s right in both legal and health and safety terms and what is unacceptable.
It’s a level of elite creative problem-solving that rivals any top-tier industrial design agency, enabling us to provide detailed visuals and 3D renders.

Engineering ingenuity: More Than Just “Coachbuilders”
Designing an attention-grabbing exhibition vehicle, a discreet surveillance van, or an inviting community welfare vehicle, installing high-tech communications, activities for teenagers or providing display showroom interiors is one thing. Ensuring what has been designed is road-legal, structurally sound, and incredibly resilient is quite another. Hence, we do not just produce attractive visuals; we operate the very latest systems for engineering CAD design.
The technical expertise we possess to build special-purpose vehicles rivals that of major global automotive manufacturers. Our engineering team possesses an incredibly broad, multidisciplinary knowledge base that spans:
- Structural Integrity & Armouring: Designing bespoke chassis modifications and installing heavy-duty armour plating for high-security vehicles without compromising vehicle handling.
- Off-Grid Power Systems: Engineering complex auxiliary power solutions, including lithium-ion battery banks, silent generators, and solar integration to keep medical or communication equipment running 24/7.
- Advanced Communications & IT: Setting up satellite arrays, secure radio systems, vehicle tracking, and robust onboard IT networks for mobile command centres.
- Specialist Equipment Integration: From installing delicate, calibrated medical imaging devices and surgical tools to commercial-grade catering kitchens and high-definition CCTV monitoring suites.
Every nut and bolt, weld and cable must comply with rigorous legal and safety standards, and we manage all this complexity under one roof.
From a blank sheet to the open road
When you partner with Multi Vehicle Technology, you aren’t just hiring a vehicle converter. You are hiring:
- An elite design agency that can turn a “wish list” into a stunning visual reality.
- A high-tech systems integrator capable of installing military-grade comms, surveillance and security systems.
- A manufacturer that understands the mechanics and legality of all vehicle types from vans to articulated trailers
We may not have the widely appreciated high-profile image of some creative industries or spend our valuable time seeking spurious design awards, because we get something much better: the satisfaction of knowing our vehicles are out there every day, saving lives, helping people stay secure, protecting assets, helping communities, and driving many businesses forward.
Do you have a design wish list?
